Can you really go to work without being injured?

I am always interested in others point of view about injuries in the workplace. Many people say that if you work in a place with opportunites to get injured it is just going to happen.

I am a believer that all injury incidents are preventable. Before everyone starts moaning "Great another pie in the sky dreamer", let me be clear, I have worked on many large sites (500-1000 persons) in construction, maintenance, petrochemical and oil and gas. I have worked on sites that have gone 1,000,000 hours or more without a recordable injury. I have also worked on sites where they were lucky to go a day or two without a recordable. The difference? On the sites with 1,000,000 + hrs without a recordable, the attitude was that any injury was unacceptable. If anyone was injured the company beleived that the manager of that area was responsible for the injury and demanded a full investigation and mitigatigation actions put in place to prevent a reoccurence. Beleive me, when the company holds management responsible for and accountable for safety the whole attitude towards injury changes. The managers instilled the culture that they would not listen to excuses. Hazard assessments, work procedures, near miss recording etc were a part of everyones daily routine. The key is it must be driven at every level of the organization, no excuses are accepted and failure to follow established procedures and policies can and does lead to disiplinary action.
